Right Turn At Albuquerque of the Day: A juvenile Emperor Penguin — native to Antarctica — somehow managed to find itself on the shores of New Zealand’s North Island.
The wayward penguin — believed to be the first ever sighted in the wild on North Island — was spotted by Christine Wilson, who was walking along Peka Peka beach with her dog. “I was [thinking] ‘Am I imagining this?,” Wilson told ABC Radio National Breakfast.
New Zealand conservationists who observed “Happy Face,” as Wilson named the penguin, say it appears healthy, but will need to head south soon to survive.
